Tribal Unit Responsibilities • Administer Grants to Indian Tribal Governments and Sexual Assault Services Program • Administer Tribal Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalitions Program • Manage all OVW grant awards to Indian Tribes • Develop Training and Technical Assistance for OVW’s Tribal Grantees • Oversee certain aspects of Title IX of VAWA 2005
Tribal Activities for 2009 • Adapting DOJ Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Forensic Examination Protocol for use in Tribal Communities. • November 2009 Focus Group on Adult Sexual Assault in Indian Country to discuss strategies for increasing tribal applications addressing this issue.
Other projects • Sexual Assault Forensic Evidence: Services, Training, Access, and Resource Project • Oklahoma Summit on Violence Against Indian women, “Journey to Justice,” is being held December 2-3, in OKC.
Coordination with NIJ on Research Program • Section 904 Task Force on Violence Against Women in Indian Country was appointed in April 2008 – 17 members on TF • OVW has worked with NIJ to hold three task force meetings • A proposed Research Program of Study was presented last December which has guided the Task Force work over the coming year
