Profits & Ethics The question is : Is itfair to make profits ? yes, itcould! • The Rootsin the libertarianismtheory. Philosophical & Politicaltheory
Whatdoesthistheorydefend? • « A society isfair (just) when the principle of freedomisrespected ! » • There are otherways : • Utilitarism – happyness • Marxism – equality • Rawls ‘ theory – bothfreedom & equality • Habermas - acting communition • Honneth - recognition
Freedom for libertarians? Wecan do all whatwewantto do! BUT in A coherentlegalsystem: • Property of the body • Fair transactions of the Properties • Propertiesorigine In this case, profits are « fair »!
Could the « Freedom » idea had split to Ultracapitalism ? YES!
Ultracapitalime ? « The one and onlycompagnies reponsabilityisprofitability » CSQS 25,000 poeple are starvingeachday!!!
II Is it possible to increasemorality in the ultracapitalism ? « Corporate Social Responsability » and « Stakeholders » Principleresponsability « Technologies self-sufficiency » « Next » generations Differentresponsabilities « depending on… » The Care Measure the actions according on the « response » its impacts on « others’weakness »
They try to do… • This recent point of view (raising of moral standart) derives largely from the developpement of The Corporate Social Responsability concept. • The CSR fondation – values coming from the bible and the Christian heritage (some decades ago – late 1960s and early 1970s)
Corporate social responsabilityDefinition 1 • Corporate conscience • Corporatecitizenship • Social performanence • Sustainableresponsiblebusiness A voluntaryprocesswith the aim to embraceresponsability for all the company’sactions CSR =
Defintition 2 encourage a positive impact throughitsactitivitieson all stakeholders • Environment • consumers • communities • membres of the public sphere ✪ employees (includingoldworkers) CSR =
Is it actually a progress ? • Implementationof thisprocess=a important cost • Weak or bad return on investment (in terms of profits) • CSR processisan « image »to distractconsumers and employeesfromethical questions posed by the companycoreoperations.
Judgement ? If real implication in CSR – there are real befenits for all stakeholders! If CSR = communication aliby and marketing outline – No moral inprovement • Nobodyis able to clearlyjudgethis paradoxal situation • In myphilosopher’s opinion – NO real progress!
III Principleresponsability « Technologies self-sufficiency» « Next » generations Differentresponsabilities « depending on… » The Care Measure the actions according to the « response » its impacts on « others’weakness »
THE Principle responsabilityH. Jonas Warning!!! Our responsability is To maintenour links with the nature To anticipate the impacts on the unborngenerations To increasemorality all aroundour local situation • Technologies are more and more independant from the human being • We have to pay attention to the next generations • We haven’t the same level of responsability
IV The Care Measure the actions according on (the « response ») its impacts on « others’weakness »
« Care » Comes from C. Gilligan • Nurses’ fields • Feministstudies • « stay by the bedside » • Ethicalfield = measurethe actions accordingto its impacts on « others’weakness »
Measure the actions according to (the « response ») its impacts on « others’weakness » It couldbecome a ethical criterium and a new way to solidarity and non-profit based society • As an individual • In yourcommunity live • In yourfight for a fair society
Profits & ethics • Profits are « valid » on an ethical point of view! • But ultracapitalismkillsHumanbeings Is it possible to increasemoralityultracapitalism by way of CSR ? • No! It isactuallyoften a screen or an aliby Principleresponsability • If wewant to preserve The HumanBeing & the nature… • we have to applythisPrinciple in all our actions HOW? HOW? With The Care attitude! • Measuring the actions according to the response in its impacts on the « others’weakness » • In all relationships – individual, groups & companies - society
We can try it… for the three last IP’(happy)days Thankyou Merci
