Blessed … “Blessed” is not how one feels (happy), but what God thinks of them. So to be blessed is to be approved and rewarded by God.
Woe … “Woe” is the negative prophetic oracle. It introduces a warning of God’s disapproval and coming judgment.
Blessed are the poor (in spirit) Attribute: Poor (in spirit) This word (ptochos) speaks of a wretched beggar. This is one who is dependent on the giving of others. Blessed are you who know your deep spiritual poverty and realize you need God’s help.
“Poverty of spirit is the personal acknowledgement of spiritual bankruptcy. It is the conscious confession of unworth before God.” … D. A. Carson This is true in justification. And it is true daily in sanctification. God is always opposed to the proud, but gives (pardoning, cleansing and enabling) grace to the humble.
Poverty of spirit is countercultural and offensive to prideful flesh. Trust thyself, every heart vibrates to that iron string. Discontent is the want of self-reliance. It is infirmity of will. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Abraham "Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes." (Gen. 18:27) Jacob "I am not worthy of the least of all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness which thou hast shown to thy servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan; and now I have become two companies." (Gen. 32:10)
Moses "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt? . . . Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either heretofore or since thou hast spoken to thy servant; but I am slow of speech and of tongue" (Exodus 3:11; 4:10).
Moses "Who made man's mouth? Who makes him dumb, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak." (Ex. 4:11–12)
David "Who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from thee, and of thy own have we given thee" (1 Chron. 29:14). Syrophoenecian Woman “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table.”
Blessed are the poor (in spirit) Reward: “for yours is the kingdom of God” The Kingdom of God is His reign in redemptive love in people’s lives. You will experience the love of God. You will experience the power of God. You will experience the redemption of God.
