  3. Objectives Students will • Identify the characteristics of animals • Differentiate between vertebrates and invertebrates • Explain how symmetry of animals differs • *Review vocabulary index cards

  5. Symmetry • Symmetry refers to the arrangement of the individual parts of an object that can be divided into similar halves. 3 Types of Symmetry • Radial • - Body parts arranged in a circle around a central point • -Examples: jellyfish, sea urchins and sea anemone

  6. Symmetry • Bilateral • -Body parts that are nearly mirror images of each other. A line can be drawn down the center of their bodies to divide them into two equal parts. • -Examples: Grasshoppers, Lobsters and humans • Asymmetrical • -Body parts that cannot be divided into similar halves • -Example: sponges

  7. Animal Classification • Invertebrates are animals that do not have backbone. About 97% of all animals are invertebrates. Groups of Invertebrate Animals
