  1. Gal 2:11-14 Paul & Peter and the Gospel - Part 2 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. 13 The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?

  2. 11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. Cephas came to Antioch I (Paul) opposed him to his face opposed - anthistēmi - to stand against, resist, whether in deed or word Zodhiates face - prosōpon - denotes "the countenance,“ lit., "the part towards the eyes" (from pros, "towards," ops, "the eye") Vine because he stood condemned stood condemned – kataginōskō - to be blamed, worthy of blame, reprehensible Vine

  3. 12 For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. he used to eat with the Gentiles lit. he was eating (continuous action in past time) prior to the coming of certain men from James who were these men ? called “the party” of the circumcision lit: “the ones” of the circumcision (Jewish Christians) see Col 4:10-11 and Titus 1:10

  4. 12 For prior to the coming of certain men from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof, fearing the party of the circumcision. fearing the party of the circumcision fearing- phobeō - to put in fear, terrify, frighten Was this Cephas’ first time he has eaten with Gentiles ? he began to withdraw and hold himself aloof withdraw - hypostellō - to draw oneself back, out of sight see Acts 20:20 & 27 hold himself aloof or was separating himself

  5. 13 The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. The rest of the Jews joined him (Cephas) in hypocrisy hypocrisy(verb) – the acting of a stage-player, to be something you are not Vine lit: to join in pretense Who did Cephas act like ? Who is the real Cephas ?

  6. 13 The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy. the result – Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy carried away - synapagō - to be led or carried away with something see 2 Peter 3:17 by their (Cephas & the Jews) hypocrisy he is acting as if he were a Jew and not a Christian see 1 Peter 2:1

  7. 14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? I (Paul) saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel straightforward - to walk in a straight path, to walk uprightly, correctly the truth of the gospel – see Gal. 2:3-5 What truth about the Gospel is being spoken of here ?

  8. 14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews? Ifyou, being a Jew live like (as a) the Gentiles and not like the Jews (then) how (why) youcompel the Gentiles to live like Jews

  9. The issue in Galatians 2:3-5 and 2:11-14 * (that the truth of the Gospel might continue - through believers’ lives) The truth of the Gospel: General: the good news - who is Christ – His person - what Christ has done – His work - who we are in Christ – His body (church) Specific in Galatians - we have liberty in Christ - we are free from our sin nature - we are free from the law system - stand in your liberty - let this truth of your liberty continue in you * Hal Molloy 1/8/1995
