The East Sicily Node Facilities WG discussion on Mediterranean Sites Giorgio Riccobene INFN-LNS, Catania riccobene@lns.infn.it All Regions Workshop #2, 5-7 Oct.. 2009, Paris, France G. Riccobene – LNS / INFN
East-Sicily: KM3NeT and ESONET/EMSO Three sites of common interest for the KM3NeT and ESONET / EMSO Consortia
East-Sicily: Catania and Capo Passero Infrastructures realised by INFN within the NEMO Project aiming at the construction of a deep sea underwater neutrino telescope. Fundings also by EU, Regione Sicilia, MIUR Catania Test Site: 25 km East offshore the port of Catania, 2000 m depth Capo Passero Site: 85 km South East offshore Capo Passero, 3500 m depth
East-Sicily: Catania Test Site infrastructure Installation at 2000 m depth LNS-INFN Catania Test Site North INGV Internet Radio Link 5 km 20 km 5 km LNS Test Site Laboratory at the port of Catania NEMO JB Test Site South
East-Sicily: Catania TS shore facilities The Catania Test Site shore laboratory has: Large structures construction hall Data acquisition hall Power suppliers (under UPS) Electronics workshops Conference room 20’’ pressure test chamber (400 bar) 32 Mbps radio link to LNS-INFN. The port of Catania is the logistic base of Elettra-Tlc, member of MECMA and owner of the Teliri and Certamen C/L vessels. LNS is one of the four laboratories of INFN. LNS is connected (now at 1 Gbps) to the Italian Internet Infrastructure for Scientific Research (GARR) LNS hosts the main Storage Units and Servers (e.g. For LIDO-DM) and it is a node of the European GRID
East-Sicily: Catania TS North • TSN Frame and SN-1 Installation • SN-1 recovery for refurbishment • 2010 LIDO East Sicily Installation (TSN) Frame deployment SN-1 connection SN1- recovery SN-1 (2005-2008) Sensors 3-component seismometer; Hydrophone (geophysics); Gravity meter; Scalar magnetometer; 3-axes current meter; CTD
East-Sicily: Catania TS South • TSS Frame and ODE installation • 2006 Junction Box and NEMO Phase 1 deployment • Junction Box recovery for maintenance • JB re-deployment. ODE recovery for refurbishment • 2010 LIDO East Sicily Installation (TSS) Experiments Sensors ODE 4 hydrophones (bioacoustics, environmental monitoring) NEMO Phase 1 16 optical modules, CTD, ADCP (neutrino telescope demonstrator) Frame with ODE NEMO Phase-1 tower Junction Box
East-Sicily: the JB at Catania TS South 700 VAC (3-phase) 10 kVA power supply is installed on-shore Two output e.o. ROV mateableconnectors available Power load per outup connector: 1.5 kVA - 380 VAC (3-phase) Optical fibre link: DWDM (optional CWDM)
East-Sicily: LIDO at the Catania Test Site Installation at 2000 m depth LNS-INFN Catania: main storage unit; servers; 1 Gbps connection to internet LIDO TS North Test Site North New ! CREEP of UCL 5 km Radio Link (32 Mbps) LIDO TS South 20 km 5 km LNS Test Site Laboratory at the port of Catania: shore data acquisition system; local storage unit NEMO JB Test Site South
East-Sicily: CREEP undersea deformation lab Study of accelerations preceeding crustal failure CREEP 10-6 10-9 10-22 10-25
East-Sicily: Capo Passero infrastructure Capo Passero is an infrastructure suitable for km3-scale neutrino telescope installation (KM3NeT) Shore laboratory Power supplier 10 kV - 50 kW Construction Hall Data Acquisition Room Optical fiber to LNS (requested) Submarine cable 100 km - 20 fibres, DC-sea return Submarine Infrastrcture DC/DC Converter 10 kV-375 V Neptune’s-like design ROV connectors to end users Shore Laboratory in Capo Passero Harbour CP Site The site selected for the km3 detector lies on a flat and wide plateau
East-Sicily: Capo Passero infrastructure Capo Passero village The cable: 20 fibres, 1 conductor 100 kW (tested upto 80 kW), sea return Deployed on July 2007 by the Elettra Tlc – Certamen C/L. The cable fibres were continuoisly monitored from shore during the installation. Monitoring continues. The cable is suitable for the km3 telescope Cable route Capo Passero Site INFN has also applied to GARR, within the new GARR-X network, for an optical fibre connection (land) from the Capo Passero shore lab to the LNS.
East-Sicily: the CP power supply system Deployment foreseen in the end of 2009 Cable Termination Assembly 100 km cable Underwater Frame future km3 Towers KM3NeT Tower Prototype (2010) 1.5 m Alcatel shore power supply (50 kW, 10 kV max) and line power converter installed in the Capo Passero shore Lab Antares Mini Line (2009) Medium Voltage Converter
East-Sicily: the CP power supply system The Medium Voltage Converter: fully tested and ready for deployment 10 kV-DC from shore (10 kW at full work load) to 375 VDC 6 MVC required for the km3 Max output current 25 A, Operational with no load, Output Voltage ripple 1.5 V Voltage Overshoot and Undershoot on boot/stop: 8% Safety switch off at 100 A output for t > 30 µs 48 sub converters: 200Vin - 50Vout divided in to 6 stacks each with a control unit. The 48 sub converters have: Inputs in series Outputs in series/parallel matrix Large number of Sub Converters can fail without loss of output current, (50%). Cooling system in Fluorinert. Topology by JPL NASA, designed for NEPTUNE
East-Sicily: the PEGASO ROV - DSS Cougar Seaeye ROV upgraded to 4000 m The ROV moves horizontally (200 m tether cable) The DSS holds ROV garage or heavy structures INGV 3500 m dive test at the end of 2009 4000 m 30 Tons 200m
East-Sicily: Summary • The Catania Test Site at 2000 m depth is a ready-to-use infrastructure: • electro-optical wet-mateable connections, through junction box (380 VAC – 3 kW) or directly from shore • fully equipped shore lab • connection to LNS-INFN • The Capo Passero Site infrastructure at 3500 m depth • is going to be completed this year: • to be used within KM3NeT ... ESONET / EMSO • The PEGASO ROV – DSS will carry out deployment / connect ion / recovery operations of underwater structures, in deep sea sites, densely instrumented
