ESDIS Project Management of LANCE Dawn R. Lowe ESDIS Project Manager LANCE User Working Group Meeting November 16, 2010
Introduction The Land and Atmospheres Near-Real Time Capability for EOS (LANCE): Builds on existing EOSDIS elements for MODIS, AMSR-E, AIRS, MLS, and OMI Provides a comprehensive suite of EOS products within 3 hours of observation Provides data products freely (after registration)
Rationale for LANCE Levies a set of requirements that ensure a consistent service to a wide user base Establishes procedures for working with end users to identify system upgrades and changes and suggesting prioritized modifications to the UWG Promotes software re-use across and within the elements in order to reduce development and sustaining engineering costs

ESDIS Management of LANCE • Provides the supporting infrastructure: • Manages the interface to EDOS • Provides the network infrastructure • Provides funding to the individual elements • Develops and maintains the LANCE website • Collects and reports status and metrics • Coordinates joint element activities: • Advocates and identifies areas of commonality between the systems • Conducts regular LANCE status meetings with the element leads and NASA HQ • Interacts with end users concerning potential upgrades and performs related analyses • Generates annual work plans • Hosts UWG meetings
LANCE Element Responsibilities Generate and distribute products Ensure adherence to the latency requirements Perform system development and sustaining engineering Maintain the element-specific components of the LANCE web site Provide User Support for data issues raised by end users Perform analyses of resources required for potential system upgrades
Going Forward • ESDIS will continue to provide the infrastructure for LANCE and facilitate LANCE operations • ESDIS encourages feedback and suggestions from LANCE users for improving the quality of near real-time data and services • ESDIS will work with LANCE elements to implement improvements as needed • ESDIS will plan for future meetings of the LANCE User Working Group and coordinate with other NRT capabilities within NASA
