The Book of Romans God’s Power to Save
Paul’s Letter to the Romans • Paul, an apostle, chosen by Jesus Christ the Son of God (1:1-7). • He had heard that a church has been started in Rome and greatly desired to go there to work with those brethren (1:11, 13; Acts 8:14-17). • His fruit: the preaching of the gospel to all men (vs.14-15). • Rom. 1:16-17: The nature of that gospel, the theme for his entire letter. • The gospel is God’s power unto salvation • To those who believe • Man shall live by his faith.
Paul’s Letter to the Romans • Paul desired to preach the gospel: • In order to save the lost. • But also, in order to cause growth in the church. • For the Romans were already Christians, yet He still desired to preach the gospel to them (vs. 7, 8, 12, 15). • In this epistle we are taught to put our faith in the power of the gospel unto salvation (vs. 16) and how to live by faith in that gospel (vs. 17)`.

Romans 3:21-8:39Justification by Faith • Rom. 3:21-31: God’s righteousness revealed. • Law is God’s standard of righteousness. • But we are condemned because we disobey the law. • How then can a man be made righteous? • 3:21-31: Apart from the law, revealed in Christ, attained by faith in Christ. • Rom. 4:1-25: Abraham as an example. • His righteousness came by faith, not by the law, not by circumcision. • He was fully convinced of the promises of God (vs. 20-21). • He pursued the promises of God • Rom. 6-8: Freedom—the result of Salvation
Romans 3:21-8:39Justification by Faith • Rom. 5:1-11: The blessing of justification. • Rom. 5:12-27: Condemnation through Adam, salvation by Grace through Christ. • Rom. 6: Free from sin, but servants of righteousness. • Rom. 7: Righteousness of Christ and freedom not found in the law of Moses. • Rom. 8: Freedom from condemnation in Christ alone, there we are held by the love of God.
Romans 9-11The Scope of Salvation • 9:1-33: God chooses to save believers. • Some might say, “If the Jews were God’s people, how could they be lost?” • God shows that we are not so by physical connection, but by faith (Rom. 9:6-8, 2:29) • God has chosen to show mercy on the faithful, not on those who trust in their own works (9:15-16). • Therefore both Jews and Gentiles can be His people, so long as they come to Him by faith. • Any who reject Christ cannot be His people (9:30-33).
Romans 9-11The Scope of Salvation • 10:1-21: Israel chose to trust in their own righteousness. • The Jews were zealous for God, but they failed to listen to Him. • Therefore they were zealous for their own righteousness and not God’s (10:1-3). • In order for a person to receive salvation he must hear the gospel, believe the gospel, confess Christ, and obey the gospel by faith (10:14-17). • Though the gospel was preached, Israel did not obey (vs. 21).
Romans 9-11The Scope of Salvation • 11:1-36: Jews and Gentiles have salvation through faith. • Though Many of the Jews ended up lost, God has not cast away His people (11:1-2a). • He used their fall to bring salvation to the Gentiles (they crucified Christ, 11:11-12). • By bringing salvation to the Gentiles, God sought to provoke the Jews to jealously, causing them to come back to Him (11:13-15). • The lesson for the Gentiles: Do not gloat over the Jews, for if God cast them off because of unbelief, so He will cast you off for the same (11:19-21). • But all who come to Christ by faith, whether Jew or Gentile will be God’s people, Spiritual Israel.
Romans 12:1-15:13The Transformed Life • As a result of our coming out of the world through the gospel, we must learn to live according to that Gospel. • We must be transformed (12:2). • 12:1-21: In relation to overall conduct. • 13:1-7: In relation to civil authority. • 13:8-14: In relation to fellow man. • 14:1-15:13: In relation to weak brethren.
