There are six major pathogens that cause infectious diseases. They are very small and can only be seen with a microscope.
1. Virus A virus can only reproduce inside a living host cell.

2. Rickettsia . Rickettsias are pathogens that are carried in the intestines of insects.
Rickettsias cause these diseases • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever • Lyme Disease
Vectors A vector is any animal or insect that carries pathogens that cause diseases.
3. Bacteria Bacteria can reproduce anywhere, especially in dark, warm, moist places.

Diseases that are caused by fungus are cured by antifungal ointments, creams, and powders. Sometimes, a prescription medication is needed.
5. Protozoa Single Celled Animals
Diseases Caused by Protozoa • Dysentery • Cholera • Malaria
Protozoa Diseases caused by protozoa are usually found in hot tropical untreated water.
6. Parasitic Worms Usually found in raw or very rare meat. May be found in untreated water.
