Developing Goals
What about GOALS? • General statements • Derived from the purpose statement • Long-range intended outcomes • Written in broad, sometimes vague language • Goals describe the “to be” state.
Criteria for GOALS • Goals will tend to remain essentially unchanged until there • is a shift in the environment under which they were created • or the desired outcome is achieved. • Goals will normally encompass a relatively long period • (three years or more), and be easily understood by the • public. • Goals will address a gap between the current and the desired • level of service, and will be client-focused. • Goals will be challenging, yet ‘realistic and achievable’ and • the number kept to a reasonable limit (3-5). • Goals will provide a framework for more detailed levels of • planning.
SOME ‘EASY’ STEPS • Identify the purpose for your unit. • Choose goals that are consistent with that purpose as well as with the mission and goals of the institution. • Determine that your goals do not contradict any of your other goals. • Write goals in the positive NOT the negative.
WRITING OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES – Definition • Clear targets for specific action needed to meet your goals. • More detailed than goals, objectives have shorter time frames and may state quantity. • An objective is achievable, measurable, and sets the direction for strategies. • A single goal may be subdivided into multiple objectives.
Writing Measurable Objectives Every objective should include WHO, WHAT AND WHEN. Most will also include HOWand some will include aMEASUREMENT. Whoare you? What do you hope to accomplish? (most important) How do you plan to accomplish it? By when do you plan to accomplish it? While writing the objective keep asking: How will you know you have accomplished it? (This is your MEASUREMENTwhich must be one of your strategies.)

Strategies – the steps that will be taken to achieve an objective • Strategies are detailed. • Strategies are action-oriented. • Strategies are assigned to individuals. • Strategies include a completion date. • An assessment strategy is always included. • Strategies reflect budgetary and other resources.

Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Theme: “The Quality Enhancement Plan for SCC seeks to improve students’ work ready ability to communicate effectively as member of the workforce.” Every unit will be required for the 2009-2010 unit plan to write at least one objective that is directly related to the QEP. This objectives must be cost-neutral, meaning that it will require NO FUNDING. All objectives will be critiqued by members of the Institutional Effectiveness Council.
