Objectives • We will identify the requirements and characteristics of a great whole-school literacy action plan. • We will unpack the challenges of initiating a whole-school literacy action plan and brainstorm solutions. • We will create elevator speeches in which we make the case for implementing whole-school literacy plans in our respective schools.

  4. WHAT?What are the requirements of a whole-school literacy action plan? What are the characteristics of a great plan?

  6. Characteristics Considering the aforementioned requirements, what are the characteristics of a great whole-school literacy plan?

  7. WHY? Why go through the effort to design and implement a great whole-school literacy plan?

  8. HOW? How will our understanding and hard work in developing a plan empower us to make the case for implementation to key decision-makers?

  9. Suggested Step One Design and implement instructional plans for cross-content literacy.

  10. At your tables… …take 10 minutes to brainstorm the challenges and solutions based on your particular step in the plan.

  14. Review What are the requirements of a whole-school literacy plan and the characteristics of a great one? Why are whole-school literacy plans so vital to implement? How can we design and implement a great whole-school literacy plan as we consider our challenges and solutions—and present a solution-oriented pitch to the right people?

  15. What do you consider to be the most compelling challenge/solution to implementing a great whole-school literacy plan at a school with which you work? What questions still remain that you would like to have answered?
