Forensics Activity 2
What can we tell by examining a person? • Skin color? • Eye Color? • Hair Color? • Boy or Girl? • Tall or Short? • Heavy or Thin? • Big or Small?
What about trying to identify a body? • We can learn a great deal from examining the skeleton. • But first we need to know the major bones. • Do you know them?
What about trying to identify a body? • We can determine the height from measuring the bones. • Measure the Femur bone and the Tibia bone of the leg in centimeters. • Multiply by 1.30, then add 63 cm • Use this formula: Height =1.30 x (length of femur + length of tibia) + 63 cm
Measurement Number 1 Measurement Number 2
What about trying to identify a body? • We can determine the shoe size without measuring the foot. • Use this formula: • Measure the distance between the bend of the elbow and the wrist.
With a partner, measure your femur and your tibia, using a tape measure. Using the formula we learned earlier. Did you get your height correctly? With a partner, measure the distance from the bend of your elbow to your wrist. Now measure your foot. Is it the same? Now try these on yourself!
