  1. Model Bridge Building High school students build model wooden bridges and compete on efficiency, excellence and craftsmanship. Chair: Bruce Turner (509) 838-8240 Logistics: • Timing – mid-February, during Engineering Week • Location - Local Malls & Gonzaga University. • No. Students - ~125 per year • No. Kits - 800 per year • Prize - 2 Students & 1 Coach to State Competition; Winners there to National Competition.

Scholarships Engineering minded students with skills of scholastic merit, leadership, and community service plus financial need are financially supported in their pursuit of an engineering degree. Chair: Alan Gay (509) 328-5139 History: Financed by Karl M. Hansen Foundation for the past 30 years, greater than $300,000 awarded. Logistics: • Timing – applications due December, interviews by WSPE member in January • No. Students - 10 - 30 participants • Results - 6 students receive scholarships of $3500 to study engineering at a college of their choice

  3. EIT Review Course Engineers pursuing professional licensing have the opportunity to review each of the Fundamentals of Engineering technical components through a local refresher course. Chair: Beth Fifield Hodgson (509) 534-6417 Logistics: • Timing – annually, January thru April • Location - Gonzaga University • No. Students - 35 to 60 • Cost - $20 for students; $100 for professionals

  4. Math Counts Encourage 7th and 8th grade students to compete and test their knowledge of mathematics. Chair: Doug Sowder (509) 838-8555 Logistics: • Timing – mid-February • Location – Local schools • No. Students – 80 from 10 - 15 schools • Results - 2 teams (4 students/team) plus Coach go to State Competition; Top 4 individuals plus Coach go to National Competition.

  5. JETS Teams Encourage high schools students to compete as teams testing their problem solving ability. Chair: Gail Allwine – (509) 328-4220 x3526 Logistics: • Timing: February or March • Location: Gonzaga University • No. Students: 75 - 100 from local high schools • Started by Bill Ilgen > 15 years ago • Results:

  6. Engineering Banquet Recognize the engineering community in Eastern Washington region and provide an extended network opportunity. Special recognition and honors for the Engineer of the Year for each of the 8 Technical Societies in the Spokane region. Chair: President-Elect Logistics: • Timing – mid-January, Engineers Week • Location - Gonzaga University • No. Participants - 80 to 110 • Cost ~ $50/couple • Sponsorships - $100 to $3000/firm

  7. Engineering Banquet History: • Provided for >25 years • 8 Technical Societies represented with > 700 membership • Speakers include John Morrison, Irving Reed, Wendell Satre, Glen Yake, and Other Prominent People in the Community
