Ground Investigation • Design of GI in challenging environment • Active landslide complex • Restricted access • Steep slopes • Management of environmental issues within designated SSSI • Liaison with Natural England • Environmental surveys (Newts) • Development of safe working practices • Management of site operations • Supervision of 6 deep boreholes through disturbed materials • Positioning monitoring instruments (raingauge, piezometers, slip rod indicators) • Design of ongoing site monitoring strategy
Engineering solution- too expensive and environmentally unacceptable.
Pathfinder 3 bids made • Demolition • Recompense (for loss of land) • Compensation • Recompense successful for £1m.
Site investigation determined that land instability was primary driver of headscarp retreat not coastal erosion – residents therefore covered by insurance for loss of property ( rebuild value). Cayton Bay Cliff Stability Assessment Ground Investigation and Appraisal of Engineering Stabilisation Options, April 2009, put 15 properties at ‘probable’ risk within 0-1 years
Land loss 15 x £75,000 Total £1,125,000 • Property demolition costs 15 x £5,000 Total £75,000. • Project Management by Scarborough BC £22,500 • Bid total (£) 2009-2011 £1,222,500
