ICE #2 -- Argumentation The Good,The Bad,& The ugly
Feedback & Reflection The Good
THE GOOD • The majority of students finished their essays on time… • What has been helping in class in terms of pacing/timing?
THE GOOD • Strong varied forms of support • Dawn of radio • Miley Cyrus • Beavis & Butthead • Breaking Bad • Cable News • Rap/Hip-Hop Music
THE GOOD • Excellent work defining terms • Entertainment • Happiness • Mindlessness
THE GOOD • Clearer answers to the question & overall LESS revisions! • What type of prep work is most beneficial for you?
Feedback & Reflection The Bad
THE BAD • Topic sentences must present paragraph’s analytical focus…not summarize support!
THE not BAD • Entertainment comes in many forms, such as plays, TV, sporting events, the internet, etc., but all have the capacity to break down civil order. • Although people say that entertainment, especially in the form of video games, is harmless fun, they actually make a strong imprint on society and quickly desensitize it.
THE BAD • We must be cognizant of the effectiveness of structure • PARAGRAPH = shift in thought
THE BAD • Weak analytical connections • You must SHOW how your supporting detail links to and proves your argument is valid • Use language of the prompt…but don’t copy!
THE BAD • Be wary of 2nd person POV • You run the risk of offending your audience
Feedback & Reflection The Ugly
THE UGLY • Word Choice • Stuff • A lot • Things • Tons • Redundancy
THE UGLY • Contractions • INFORMAL, CONVERSATIONAL • Quickly pull them apart to elevate the diction of your writing!
THE UGLY • Sweeping statements • Throughout history • Since the dawn of America • Nowadays
THE UGLY • Do not emphasize singular words • No CAPITALS • Or Underlining
THE UGLY • Belabored intro. paragraphs • Plan during planning time – not the intro. paragraph • Efficiently answer the question…then move on to developing your argument
THE UGLY • PAST TIME not… • PASS TIME
