LIFE IN BRITAIN 1945 • Britain was a complete mess after the Second World War since it was hit by bombing of the Blitz. • The 1945 audience would have had different morals than the Birling’s, since they had experienced extreme conditions.
WOMEN OF 1945 • In 1945, women had gained appreciation from having to replace all the men fighting in the war. This means that they had more rights and were taken more seriously • In the play Mr. Birling degrades them by saying “But you’ve to remember, my boy, that clothes mean something quite different to a woman. Not just something to wear- and not only something to make ‘em look prettier- but- well, a sort of sign or token of their self-respect.” pg. 9. He is basically saying that women are inferior and are too fragile to face real issues of life.
LIFE IN BRITAIN 1912 • It is written in the Second World War in 1945, a very different time. • Priestly is contrasting a very innocent time with a time of horror, bombing and mass killing. He does this because it was written during the war where they had bigger things to worry about than their social status. This goes to show how Mr. and Mrs. Birling’s views on how the country should be run are ridiculous. Mr. B says, “..when things are so much easier, is that a man has to make his own way- has to look after himself- and his family too…” Pg.9.
