A zodiac divides the ecliptic by 360 degrees into 12 equal parts. Each twelfth (30 degrees) is called rashi (sign of the zodiac). While western astrology has used the tropical zodiac (where the signs are measured from the point of the vernal equinox in the eclípticca), the system prefers sidereal zodiac jyotish (where the signs are aligned with their eponymous constellations).
