Computer Algebra Based Assessment of Mathematics Online Laura Naismith Centre for Educational Technology and Distance Learning (CETADL) Chris Sangwin LTSN Math, Stats & OR Network
Introduction CABLE: Computer Algebra Based Learning and Evaluation A web-based, open source infrastructure for authoring, testing, storing, presenting and marking lightweight and flexible mathematical learning objects.
System Features • Modular design approach to separate out CAS functions • Learning objects consisting of CAS instantiation instructions, question stem, marking procedure and solution template • Flexible options and answer tests that allow the same object to be used in different contexts • Relational database to store learning objects, students’ attempts against particular learning object instances
Demonstration Implementation details: • PHP 4.3 • Logicampus VLE • Axiom CAS • www.cable.bham.ac.uk
Future Work • Develop full working prototype • Investigate use of interoperability standards • Investigate assessment of individual steps (Beevers et al, 1995) to facilitate awarding of partial credit
