Botschaft (U.S.)
Exchange format • MARC is generally not in use • German exchange format is MAB (Maschinelles Austauschformat für Bibliotheken), developed by Die Deutsche Bibliothek • PICA format: a derivation of MARC
Multiple volumes • Hierarchical structure (not compatible with American flat structure), • see also: Project Reuse: http://webdoc.sub.gwdg.de/ebook/aw/reuse/index.htm
PICA GBV • Lower Saxony was the first state to use the PICA system in Germany • Today seven states belong to the GBV (Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund – Joint Library Network): Bremen, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Mecklenburg-West Pomerania), Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt), Schleswig-Holstein, Thüringen (Thuringia)

SUB Göttingen and CORC • Project funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) • First user meeting in Dublin/Ohio • Small project group in Göttingen: special knowledge (MARC/AACR2) needed
Selection of electronic resources • Resources stored on our library server (many PDF resources!) • Digitized travel literature of the 19th century (offline) • Selections from our Subject Gateways
Electronic resources on our library server • Documents regarding our special core collections (Library science, Anglo-American history and culture, earth sciences, mathematics, ...) • Format: mostly PDF! • Umlaut problem! • Dewey index
Digitized travel literature (19th century) • Initial project of our digitization center (GDZ) • Record conversion from PICA to MARC • Offline delivery to CORC
Selections from our Subject Gateways Subject Gateways (data model is Dublin Core based, several quality criterias regarding maintenance and selection etc.): • Geo-Guide (earth sciences, geography, thematic maps, mining): http://www.Geo-Guide.de/ • MathGuide (mathematics): http://www.MathGuide.de/

Workflow • After the project: no specialized staff available permanently • How can we manage this in the future?
Future • Cataloging: German rules are being revised, getting closer to MARC21 for data exchange • Die Deutsche Bibliothek is translating the Dewey Decimal Classification • A German translation of AACR2 is under way
