  2. Academics Perspective: Background • California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo • Highly ranked university • Size: 18,000 Students • Main focus: Undergraduates(some grad programs) • www.calpoly.edu

  3. Academics Perspective: Background • Department of Statistics • 20 faculty, including 14 tenure track (growing) • 60 majors (growing), 30 minors (growing)

  4. Teaching Emphasis at Cal Poly • Cal Poly is not Research I • Strong emphasis on teaching • 12 units of teaching per quarter (3 classes) • However, professional development through external validation is expected • Journal publications • Writing textbooks • Grants/competitive awards

  5. Evaluation Criteria • Teaching • Extremely important to establish a strong teaching record • Professional Development • Very important to establish a good professional development record • Service • Not as important, however is expected by all faculty

  6. Expectations of Statistics Faculty • Establish your value to the department through excellent teaching, curriculum development, use of active learning techniques • Establish your value in the field through research and external funding. Research is expected even at smaller schools. • Establish your value to the university with noteworthy contributions to service. • Bottom line: Make a niche for yourself in all three areas so that your importance/value will be obvious.

  7. Attaining Tenure: The Name of the Game • All faculty are subject to an annual review • 6th year review  all important tenure decision • If tenure granted  promotion to Assoc. Prof. • ~5 years after tenure, review for promotion to Full Prof. • Make efforts to fulfill expectations of the three main areas every year (teaching, PD, service)

  8. Cal Poly: My Teaching Day • Entire day spent on teaching related issues • Preparation time for each class • 3 classes (70 minutes each) All classes 4 units each • Office hour(s) • Miscellaneous meeting(s)

  10. Build on written and communication skills Establish a good record in teaching (if receiving fellowship, volunteer!) Preparing the Professoriate (Dr. Swallow and others) Network with peers to build support group Create a Teaching Portfolio and Teaching Philosophy (Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning) Learn and practice time management skills NOW (do not expect that you will be less busy) Seek peer mentor(s) NOW Preparing for Academics

Industry Perspective: Background • MRL is the research arm of global pharmaceutical company with products in many therapeutic areas • Lab sites globally, but largest sites are in New Jersey (~ 3000 employees) and Pennsylvania (~ 4000 employees) • Large numbers of statisticians and statistical programmers in both NJ and PA

Industry Perspective:Activities of a Clinical Biostatistician • Consult with clinicians on trial design issues • Author data analysis plans in collaboration with colleagues and clinicians. • Statistical representation at meetings • study planning and initiation • document reviews • regulatory filing • Collaborate with statisticians and statistical programmers • preparation for upcoming analyses • methodological research to address arising issues. • Personal professional development, in-house process development, and personnel management.

Industry Perspective:Evaluation Criteria • Merck uses a yearly, objective-based, performance management process. • Employee sets objectives: “project” and “non-project” • Project: aligned with division goals • Non-project: aligned with division or personal goals • Manager and employee review performance during the year. • Promotion • depends on longer term performance • accomplished through a peer review process. • Compensation/benefits change with the results of yearly evaluations and with promotions.
