Objectives: - To understand the global and local factors that threaten biodiversity. - To appreciate the link between economic development and ecosystem destruction. Starter 2. The cassowary 1. The dodo The Great Barrier Reef – a natural World Heritage Site. What is a World Heritage Site? Name some examples of naturalWorld Heritage Sites. What criteria would you use to decide what makes a natural World Heritage Site? [Compare your list of criteria to those on pg. 106 of the A2 Book]

Why is the cassowary vital to the rainforest ecosystem? 2. Give THREE facts about The Wet Tropics. 3.Bullet point seven key facts that make the Daintree rainforest so important. 4. Briefly describe the climate, vegetation and soils of tropical rainforests. 5. What is leaching? 6. Complete Qu. 3ab (pg. 109).
Forested Areas of Australia Daintree Rainforest
Daintree Rainforest • Located at 16 S / 145 E • The Daintree Rainforest has a history that stretches more than 135 million years. • The Kuku Yalariji people, are believed to have inhabited the rainforest for more than 9000 years. • Added to the World Heritage List in 1988
Benefits of the rainforests (ecosystem services) • Carbon sequestration – regulating climate • Tourism – economy support and biome protection • Medicine – 25% drugs contain products from rainforests (malaria, arthritis, diabetes). Some Daintree plants seem to be anti-cancerous • Logging – industry development from 1930s-1980s • Culture – aboriginals of the wet tropic rainforests believe that the biome is their living cultural landscape
What’s the big deal? Seven key facts that make the Daintree rainforest so important: • Highest level of endemic species in Australia • 13 species of bird found no-where else • Over 65% of Australia’s butterflies and bats • 28/36 mangrove species • Example of major stages in evolution • Home to dinosaurs • Home to the deadly idiot fruit
