War Poetry Essay (Some information to help you with your writing.) A good website to use is the Online Writing Lab, http://owl.english.purdue.edu/.
Thesis • Thesis = topic + opinion • Your thesis should not be broad; it should be narrow and specific. • The thesis should answer the reader’s question(s): “Why am I reading this paper? What am I reading in this paper?”
Organization • You will need to make sure your paper flows well. • I already laid out for you the basics of what you need to write about. • You just need to decide where the paragraphs should go logically.
Quoting • When you quote a single line of poetry, write it like any other short quotation. • If the piece of poetry you are quoting crosses multiple lines of the poem itself, you may still type them in your text run together. • Show the reader where the poem's line breaks fall by using slash marks. • Ex: In his poem, "Mending Wall," Robert Frost writes: "Something there is that doesn't love a wall,/ that send the frozen-ground-swell under it."
Quoting • If the quotation is three lines or longer, set it off in a block quotation. • Quote the poem line by line as it appears on the original page. Do not use quotation marks, and indent one inch from the left margin. • In his poem "Mending Wall," Robert Frost questions the building of barriers and walls: Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense.
Lead-in Phrases • Ineffective: • Here's a quote which shows this: “ • Paul tells Tjaden, “ • It should be clear to the reader what the quotation means and why it's important (to the point you're trying to make in that paragraph).
Comma or Colon? • A colon is used to introduce a quotation following a full sentence, as in the following example: • Atticus uses the incident with Mrs. Dubose to teach Jem a lesson about courage: "Courage is when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" (112). • Use a comma if you don’t have a independent clause.
MLA Format • Top left hand side of your first page should include: • Your name • Ms. Houselog • Literature of War • Due Date • In the right hand side of the header for each page it should contain your last name and the page number.
Works Cited • There should be a Works Cited page. It will include: • Your poem • The book you are comparing your poem to. • Make sure to double check the citations if you are using any of the sources that create the citations for you. • Your Works Cited page should be on a separate page.
Works Cited: Book Source • Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. • You will need to cite whatever book you decide to compare your poem to.
Works Cited: Web Source • Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Name of Site. Version number. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Date of access.
