  3. Introduction • Is the poem and poet mentioned? • Is there a clear summary of the poem? • Is there a clear thesis statement? Is the thesis the last sentence of the paragraph?

  4. Sample Introduction • John Hamm’s poem “The Ballad of Captain Super” tells the story of a superhero who doesn’t have any super powers. Cap watches over the town he has sworn to protect. The hero sees a crisis in the town and remembers what he must do to protect the citizens. When the Captain makes his move he painfully realizes he is unable to fly. Using a mix of metaphors and similes, “The Ballad of Captain Super” shows that what we think can outweigh our physical abilities.

  10. Mechanics • Does each paragraph have a topic sentence? • Is there a variety of words used? • Use third person perspective only! • The title of the poem goes in quotation marks every time it is used! • The poet and title are capitalized every time they are mentioned!
