  1. LYSOSOMES By: Sherrial Owens & Mae Krayeski

  2. HISTORY • Christian de Duve • Ultracentrifuge • Few enzymes rose significantly

  3. LYSOSOMES -membrane bound vesicles containing various hydrolytic enzymes necessary for digesting certain material in a cell. -high acidic pH -formed by the Golgi apparatus

  4. TYPES OF LYSOSOMES • Primary lysosomes- storage granules • Secondary lysosomes- digestive granules • Residual bodies-vesicles containing indigestible materials • Autophagicvacuoles-a membrane-bound cellular organelle that engulfs pieces of the substance of the cell itself. Also known as autolysosome.

  5. Two Main Roles 1.) To digest macromolecules which enter the cell -are like sacs which contain around forty digestive enzymes -infuse with vesicles of engulfed material & release the digestive enzymes to break up the material 2.) To breakdown old nonfunctioning organelle that out lived their usefulness - cells fail to restore themselves cause to age - need to get rid of the cell of these unneeded materials that occupy space in the cell

  7. DISEASES • Lysosome storage disorders are caused by lysosomal dysfunction • LSDs occur with incidences of less than 1:100,000 • Examples: • Niemann-Pick disease, type C • Fabry disease • Hunter syndrome
