Welcome to the ‘Embedding co-production in self directed support’ workshop
Who we are: - Keith Etherington - Angela Halpin
What are we going to do: Presentation Question and answer DVD Questions and responses
Self directed support - is fundamentally about a shift of power • requires cultural change • is a significant change • takes into account people’s real wealth
Co – production: - is fundamentally about a shift of power • requires cultural change • is a significant change • takes into account people’s real wealth
More about self directed support. It’s about: • people having choice and control • exercising rights and taking responsibility • getting the life and support you want • an active rather than a passive process • people achieving the outcomes they want
Self-directed Support National Strategy for Scotland
Self directed support: • ‘the system through which disabled people can get the life and support they want. It is an active process rather than something people are given’.
More about co-production – key features • Recognising people as assets • Building on people’s existing capabilities • Mutuality and reciprocity • Peer support networks • Blurring distinctions • Facilitating rather than delivering
So it feels like it should be ‘straightforward’ to embed co-production in a sustainable system of self directed support! Or not! Like most things it depends on how a system of self directed support is implemented
Some examples of how co-production can be embedded in a system of self directed support Recognising people as assets Building on people’s existing capabilities Mutuality and reciprocity Peer support networks Blurring distinctions Facilitating rather than delivering Angela’s experience
What small steps can you take in your area to make sure that a co-production approach is embedded in a sustainable system of self – directed support that enables choice, control, flexibility and citizenship?
