The French and Indian War • Britain, Spain, and France fought one another to gain more territory. • The British soldiers wore bright red uniforms making them easy targets. • British troops capture the city of Quebec in Canada in 1759
The Proclamation of 1763 • When the French and Indian war wasover many British soldiers moved west into the land that Britain owned! • NativeAmericans were afraid that the settlers would destroy the way of life • To stop the fighting Britain made a law called Proclamation of 1763
The Quartering Act • The Quartering Act was a law that said that colonists had to house, feed, clothe, and provide transportation for British Soldiers • Colonists treated the soldiers with no respect and was not very nice towards them • The British were scared that Natives or Spaniards would attack the colonies
The Stamp Act • Britain made a new act (law) called the Stamp Act. • The Stamp Act is a law where colonists have to pay a tax on paper products because Britain owed debts. • Ex. Newspapers, marriage license, and many more paper products
The Townhend Acts • After the Stamp Act, Britain made a new act called the Townshend Act. • This act put taxes on everyday items like tea, paper, and many other things too. • The colonists would boycott (refuse to buy) any of these items until the British would repeal the act.
The Boston Massacre • The colonists were still angry about the British soldiers living in there homes and cities. • Soldiers took jobs from colonists by low pay. • A group of colonists made fun of a British soldier and he called for help and one of the soldiers said hold your fire, then one of the soldiers thought that he said fire and shot and the rest did so also. Five were killed, six were wounded and the rest were unharmed.
The Boston Tea Party • A group of colonists dressed up as Mohawk Native Americans and plotted against Britain. • Many colonists got on a boat carrying the British tea and dumped 90,000 pounds of it in the Boston Harbor. • Britain caught on to the colonists.
The Intolerable Acts • After the Boston Tea Party was over, Britain made a new act (law) called The Intolerable Acts. • The colonists could not import or export goods because Britain closed the harbor. • People throughout the colonies promised to help Boston by sending money, food, and supplies.
