The Golden Spike • The Golden Spike refers to the time when the Union and Central Pacific Railroads met. This actually happened in Box Elder County! • This was a huge moment in US history, it meant that the whole continent was connected. • The Golden Spike - YouTube
Ghost Towns • After the railroad was finished, there were a lot of towns that weren’t needed anymore. They are fun places to visit! • Blue Creek: a railroad camp that was abandoned. • Corinne: a town that didn’t allow Mormons in it. It got shut down shortly after the railroad was rerouted and didn’t go through Corinne. • Kelton: also abandoned after the railroad was rerouted through Salt Lake. Railroad tracks can still be driven on though!
Famous Works of Art • It’s weird to call it art, but it is! • The Spiral Jetty: built in 1970 by Robert Smithson in the Great Salt Lake. It changes every time because of the salt water around it. You can even take some salt crystals home with you as a souvenir. • Sun Tunnels: done by Nancy Holt. The tunnels line up with the sun and different constellations
Famous People • Abraham Lincoln? Oprah? No… even better! The Berlin Candy Bomber! • Gail Halversen was from Box Elder County • He was a pilot in WWII. One day he was talking to some German children who were hungry and asked for any candy or gum. He gave them what they had and promised he’d bring back more next time. He said he’d wiggle his wings so that they knew it was him and then drop the candy. Then he did.
