Fuel cell technology • One of the many possible solutions to energy production and pollution issue
Christian Friedrich Schonbein Nationality: German Occupation: chemist Born: 1799 Died: 1868 Known for: invention of fuel cell
William Robert Grove Nationality: British (Welsh) Occupation: Physical Scientist Born: 1811 Died: 1896 Known for: development of fuel cell in 1843
Applications of fuel cells in the past and today Weather stations Military applications Soldier Wearable and Portable Power, Sensors and Surveillance, Stationary Power Space applications
How it works • A fuel cell is a device that converts the chemical energy from a fuel into electricity. The chemical reaction which generates electricity is a combination of oxygen and hydrogen (fuel)
Anode and cathode are separated by electrolyte membrane
The Hydrogen is split into positive Hydrogen ions /(protons) and negatively charged electrons
The membrane allows the positively charged ions to move to the cathode
Electrical current is created by the movement of the electrons towards the cathode via an external circuit
Waste product Water either as vapour or liquid or both
Fuel cell stack • A fuel cell produces 0,86 volts so we need several fuel cells which are connected together in a Fuel cell stack
Disadvantages • Difficulties in the production, transportation distribution and storage of Hydrogen • Fuel cells are very expensive to produce • Most of them are hand-made
