Revolutions Project • Each team will research a modern revolution or war for independence. • Each team will present their findings to the class. • The presentation will count the same as a final exam. • You will have four days in the library (4/29 – 5/2) and one day in class to practice your presentation.
What is a Revolution? • a sudden, complete or marked change in something: the present revolution in church architecture. • History: a forcible overthrow of a government or social order in favor of a new system. • Sociology: a radical and pervasive change in society and the social structure, especially one made suddenly and often accompanied by violence. • synonyms: rebellion, revolt, insurrection, mutiny, uprising, riot, rioting, insurgence, seizure of power, coup (d'état)
MAJOR Characteristics of a (violent) Revolution • (1) Must attack old order • (2) Replace old order with new state structure • (3) often the new structure is more representative • (4) Restores liberty (more rights) • (5) Happens in steps (phases) • (6) Preceded by a strong belief in an “ism” • an ism is a belief, you have to have the idea before you have the revolution • if those first two don’t happen, a revolution won’t happen
COMMON Characteristics of a Revolution • (1) Starts with tax increase • (2) Ruler refuses to compromise • (3) Rebellion of an army • (4) Division of revolutionary movement • (5) Starts with economic hardship • (6) Threat of outside forces (often happens in the latter phases of a revolution)
