NSF 61 Certified Booster System By Skip Roberts National Sales Manager TIGERFLOWSystems, Inc
Who is NSF??? • Public Health and Safety Co. • Non-Profit, Non Governmental organization • World Leader in standards development, product certification, education and risk management for public safety
What doesNSFMean? • National Sanitary Foundation • When originally founded • They only use the initials as part of the name today
NSF is Dedicated to: • Public Health • Public Safety • Environmental Protection
NSF Standards Focus • Food • Water • Indoor air • Environment
Why NSF/ANSI 61 Approved? • City of Los Angeles requirement • EPA requirement since 1988 • 44 States currently have NSF 61 requirements for drinking water • Covers all products in contact with drinking water from source to tap • Deals with potential extractants whether organic or metal • Does not evaluate product performance
Why NSF/ANSI 61 Approved? How was it developed: • Development lead by NSF, AWWA, AwwaRF, US EPA, ASDWA (Association of Safe Drinking Water Administrators) • Developed and revised annually by a balanced joint committee comprised of: • US and Canadian regulators • Water utility and other users representatives • Product manufactures
NSF/ANSI 61What does it cover… Products or materials that come into contact with drinking water or drinking water treatment chemicals such as: • Pipes and fittings • Joining & sealing material • Paints & coatings • Process media • Endpoint devices • Faucets • Drinking fountains • Mechanical devices – booster systems, etc • Process equipment • Water meters, valves
NSF/ANSI 61DRINKING WATER COMPONENTS Acceptance Criteria • Regulated contaminants • Includes USEPA and Health Canada regulated contaminants and EPA health advisories • Non Regulated contaminants • More than 600 risk values have been set by NSF to address leaching of chemicals from materials that contact drinking water.
U.S. DRINKING WATER AUTHORITIES • Federal – EPA Safe Drinking Water Act (1976) and Amendment (1986 & 1996) • Minimum national requirements for drinking water quality and monitoring for public water systems • State Missouri – Has primacy for compliance and enforcement of Safe Drinking Water Act • Carried out through state regulation • Cities/Municipal Utility Districts – Responsible for water quality and reporting functions for public water systems
Regulation of Plumbing Products (within a building) • Regulated at state, county and city level through plumbing codes (IPC) • Chapter 7 reference section 605.3, 605.4, 605.5, 605.7, 608.3, 608.3.1 • Missouri Water Resources Law (sect. 640.400) says ANSI/NSF 61 as specified in the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act shall be incorporated to meet Federal guidelines.
IAMPO ??? • International Association of Mechanical and Plumbing Officials • Recommended by City of LA • Internationally Recognized 3rd party testing and certifying agency • Complies with and certifies to plumbing use: • ANSI/NSF • ISO • International Building Code • Uniform Building Code • NFPA
NSF61 Booster System Requirements • All passageway components must be assessed and approved: • Valves • Headers • Coatings • Piping • Pumps • Gaskets 5169
What are the component Requirements? • Stainless Steel headers • NSF approved valves (Butterfly, Check and PRV) • NSF approved coating material • NSF61 approved pumps • NSF approved gasket material • Special label for each system 5169
Coating Material • PPG Ameron 2/400 coating material • Thickness is determined by pipe diameter 5169
Pipe • 2-8” 304 Stainless Steel headers • Steel Pipe with NSF approved coating in waterway • Copper pipe as approved by NSF 5169
Valves • Valve body has an NSF61 internal coating • PPG Ameron 2/400 coating • Stainless Steel internals • Type L copper sensing lines 5169
NSF 61 not 51 Approved • Many Pump manufactures claim to be NSF approved • Only for Swimming pool use (NSF51) • Two manufacturers approved for NSF61 Drinking Water • Grundfos (owns Paco) • Paco • Goulds submersible turbine (limited size approval) 5169
Gasket Material • EDPM (Ethylene Propylene Terpolymer) • NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) 5169
What’s the Big DEAL! • 44 states require NSF 61 systems currently • Clean drinking water • No people getting sick due to pumped water • Not with NSF 61 approved system • Has it happened? - YES • Will it happen again? - YES • Do you want to take that chance? N-5169
