Write notes • Every five lines, write down what you think the main idea is (your opinion—not a quote) • Use shorthand • KISS • Ask what is the author’s purpose and audience for what he wrote
Time and Setting • Underline or circle words that tell you the time or place where the piece is set: “today,” “once,” Renaissance,” “medieval,” “When…” • These could be questions later– off to the side, write the marker word
Logic words • Watch for words like “so,” “clearly,” and “therefore,” or “since.” • Make sure to note “U-Turn” words:
Quality words • Circleadjectives and adverbs that show point of view or opinion • Words that talk about how, what kind, or how good something is draw your attention to important facts
AHA’s • Places where the writer says “for example,” or offers facts to back up his opinions are extremely important! • Note these off to the side with whatever doodle you doodle and write the word it is an example of.
Quality words Important Expensive Best Highly definitely
U-Turns However Even though While Despite But
Significance Look at the sentence– does it have a surprise in it? Something you didn’t know? Write down or mark anything you think is interesting (or that you think the writer wants you to think is interesting)
