Reflection The goal of this PowerPoint slideshow is to “engage” secondary history students while introducing Communism and its core contributors: Marx, Lenin, and Mao. A red background was chosen to represent the symbolism behind the “Red Scare.” The visual aids represent both the past and present state of countries where these theorists and activists had influence. Photos from the past were left in black and white. On the other hand, current events are in color to represent relevance to today as well as to draw student attention for discussion. The quotes serve as transitions between each group of leaders and are intended to convey ideas that will spark student thought as to the complexity of communism.Ultimately, this presentation should be taken a step further by students. Perhaps having them focus in more detail on the influences of these leaders outside their own country and the impact that has had on current events. For instance, students could study the influences of the Soviet Union and Cuba in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and etc. Moreover, they could study the influences of Mao in Peru and how it triggered the Shining Path movement.
