Discussed Today FL4 “FUN” History Project Scope Schedule Cabling Media Issues
History – The “FUN” Project • Project Completed in 12/1999 • Cable installed • Two 4-pair Telephone cables • Four Category 5 Cables • Two Pair of 62.5um Fiber • Infrastructure Outlets were installed with ¾” conduit single runs to the Telecom Room or Vert. Chase
2009 Re-cabling Project Scope • Install cabling to meet GigE and beyond standards • Reuse as much existing infrastructure as possible • Have the cabling meet the networking need for at least the next 10 years • Budgeted amount for project is $110,000 • Individual group’s computer rooms are not in scope • Groups can “buy-in” to have their rooms upgraded
Re-cabling Schedule • Will be scheduled after and with new phone deployment • Coordinates logical sections of the building • Must be in sequence with other infrastructure work • Works in concert with occupants to get project done and continue daily work • Work Zones • Would be different than 1999 project • Consolidation locations require larger areas
Occupant Move Options • Relocate FL4 staff as necessary to CG2 temporary space and/or work from home • Relocate FL4 staff to other available space in FL4 and/or work from home • FL4 staff stay in office with shared telephone and wireless • Minimal disruption, 2-3 days for cable pulls/termination/testing • General noise in area
Construction Schedule • TOTAL Duration of Project: 38 Weeks • 4 Weeks - Prepare FL4-1012 Room, 126 Outlets • 5 Weeks - East First Floor - 19 + 27 = 46 Outlets • 2 Days Move In • 2 Days Move Out • 5 Weeks - East Second Floor - 12 + 22 = 34 Outlets • 2 Days Move In • 2 Days Move Out • 5 Weeks - East Third Floor - 24 + 23 = 46 Outlets • 2 Days Move In • 2 Days Move Out
Construction Schedule – Cont. • 4 Weeks - Prepare FL4-2060 Room, 127 Outlets • 5 Weeks - West First Floor - 26 + 15 = 41 Outlets • 2 Days Move In • 2 Days Move Out • 5 Weeks - West Second Floor - 27 + 16 = 43 Outlets • 2 Days Move In • 2 Days Move Out • 5 Weeks - West Third Floor - 21 + 22 = 43 Outlets • 2 Days Move In • 2 Days Move Out
Network Cabling Selection • Infrastructure Constraints • Cabling Media • No need for dedicated phone lines • High performance optical fiber • Highest performance copper media • Category6 copper media to support 1 Gbps
Copper Cabling Choices • Copper Evaluation • Criteria: size, performance, termination ease, reusability • Termination Hardware • Criteria: compatibility with existing hardware, performance, termination ease • Cable & Termination Hardware “Bake-Off” Planned • Final cabling media test in FL4
Cabling Density vs Speed • The higher the speed of the copper cable, the larger the diameter size • Cost, infrastructure space, time to terminate • Should more total ports be installed with some at a lower speed or fewer ports at the highest speed? • Two 10+GigE ports vs one or two 10GigE plus one or two 1+GigE ports?
Telecom Room Preparation Larger diameter cable, larger cable management Racks need to be moved New panels will have different density No need for telephone punch-down blocks
Final Project Preparation • NCAB – Network media installed • Cabling/Termination Evaluation Schedule • Selection soon • Working with vendors for material delivery • Schedule discussion with FL4 occupants • Telecom Rooms demo/preparation • Infrastructure fixes
