  3. Mansa Musa’s Golden Hajj (1324) • Mansa Musa was the king of Mali, and he was a devoted muslim. • He made a famous hajj to Mecca bringing 12,000 servants and 300 pounds of gold • Stories of Musa’s wealth spread around the world

Timbuktu: A City of Learning • Mansa Musa returned from Mecca with a team of architects and muslim teachers. • They built the amazing Sankore Mosque and University in the city of Timbuktu • Timbuktu grew to became one of the worlds most advanced centers of learning.
