The RDARI Interest Group of the Research Data Alliance • Research Data Architectures in Research Institutions (RDARI) Objectives • Exploring how diverse tools, technologies, and services can be integrated to meet the evolving needs of researchers in research institutions. • Considering interoperability between institutional research data infrastructures and (inter)national or discipline-based infrastructures • Understanding the different institutional approaches to governance structures and business processes in responding to research ICT demands (e.g. capacity planning/forecasting for storage) • Sharing case studies of solutions developed by data infrastructure projects in research institutions • Presenting technical innovations and ideas that can further the development of integrated research data infrastructures • Agreeing best practice relating to research data architectures in research institutions
Why and How the Survey was Developed • Aims: • Comparing policies and practicalities • Understanding state of the art within the field • Making contact with others using same technologies and solutions • Getting ideas on what works from others • Mapping developments over time • Getting a sense of the range of services being provided • Processes: • Seeking relevant questions to re-use related surveys • Remote brainstorming of questions • Validation and addition of questions at RDA Plenaries • Consideration of whether questions are ambiguous and actually answerable • Consideration of possible answers and ontologies • Narrowing of questions to a manageable length • Selection of survey tool and building of survey • Testing • Tracking distribution
The Survey Structure & Questions • Introduction • About the Institution and Respondent • Governance • Infrastructure and volumes • Services: • Research Data Storage (for ‘live’ data) • Research Data Repository or Archive • RDM Advisory Service • Research Data Back-up Service • Data Management Planning Service • Research Database Hosting • Electronic Lab Notebooks • Data Safe Haven or Sensitive Data Handling • Dark Archive • Local/Remote File Synchronization • Special Data Collections Showcase • Any other data management Services • Gaps and integrations • Personal details (if happy to share) Repeating question set for each service
