Law Enforcement, When? • Law enforcement is a key component of any threat assessment effort • All schools have law enforcement resources available • Different agencies are accessible for different reasons
Threat Assessment Team • Human Resources • Student Affairs • Academic Affairs • Legal Counsel • Dean of Students • Security • Law Enforcement
Discovery • Potential threats are realized by the threat assessment team • Law Enforcement is part of this discovery process as well as a player in the later management of the threat
Contained within Campus? • Threat • Target • Location • Collateral Sources of Information
Information • Law enforcement has access to a large amount of unique and useful information • Local information • Information from other agencies • Information from other sources
Information matters, now • Assessment and management of a threat will be most successful when the assessment team has the most information available at the start of the process • After management begins, information from many sources will guide the direction of how the threat situation is treated
Law Enforcement, who? • Local, county and state agencies • Operate under predetermined allocations of services • Your local agency may call on other agencies for investigative resources • Jurisdiction/venue
Law Enforcement, how? • Contact your local police department • Ask to meet about threat assessment • Determine who to contact when a threat assessment issue emerges • Establish a common understanding of the purpose of a request for help in this area • Create a two way flow of information between both entities • Formalize membership of team members
