Geography • The third largest state in the U.S. • 7,734 square miles of California is covered by water. • The highest point in California is Mt. Whitney at 14,494 feet. • The lowest point in California is in the Death Valley. • The mean elevation of California is 2,900 feet above sea level. • Its major rivers include the Sacramento, Colorado, and San Joaquin. • Its major lakes include Lake Tahoe, Salton Sea, Owens lake, and Searles Lake. • Its coastline runs 840 miles long.
Economics • State Governor- Jerry Brown • The 2011 Budget Act of California funds $64.1 billion to the K-12 education programs. • The Proposition 98 guarantees minimum funding levels for the K-12 school and community colleges. • The Guarantee for the Proposition 98 is exactly $48.7 billion. • An increase of $578.1 million ensures that the Guarantee does not decrease with the shift in motor vehicle fuel revuenes.
Economics • An increase of $221.8 million reflects the inclusion of mental health and out-of-home care services within the Guarantee. • A decrease of $1.134 billion reflects the exclusion of child care programs, except part-day preschool programs from Proposition 98. • A decrease of $1.7 billion ensures the total Guarantee does not change as a result of new local revenue related to redevelopment agencies. • Proposition 98 decreased by $2.1 billion as a result to the reduction of General fund sales tax revenue for the realignment of public safety programs to counties.
