Overview Collaborative efforts in SSA for Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in Sub-Saharan Africa under TerrAfrica need to be framed within governance structure that is: • Coherent • Lean • Inclusive • Accountable • Responsive This structure should • Engage stakeholders from all interested sectors • Address weaknesses and gaps identified in past • Record, promote and coordinate proposed TerrAfrica priorities
Governance Principles The following principles govern TerrAfrica: • African country ownership • Transparency and accountability • Broad-based participation including civil society and local farming communities • Subsidiarity based on partners’ comparative advantage • Measurable and sustainable performance and results
Structure TerrAfrica has a two-tier decision-making structure: Country Level Regional Platform Level • Consultative Forum • Executive Committee • Secretariat • Special Advisory Groups

Summary of Bodies Consultative Forum • Umbrella for the exchange of information and specific policy and technical discussions • Intended to provide substantive inputs to guide the strengthening of an enabling environment to achieve TerrAfrica’s mission statement • Open to all interested stakeholders Executive Committee • Limited to 10 active partners representing core constituencies • Co-Chaired by two partners • Decides on: • Strategy and Business Plan • Annual Work Program • Governance • Invites Stakeholders to Consultative Forum • Creates Special Advisory Groups when needed • Meets once a year in connection with COP/UNCCD
Summary of Bodies Secretariat • Facilitates Work Program (preparation, implementation…) • Supports EC • Supports and facilitates organization of CF • Manages MDTF and activities related to accountability • TerrAfrica reporting and M&E • Small unit hosted by one partner (World Bank), plan to have it hosted in NEPAD after initial period • Participation of partners assuming specific tasks, possible secondments
