Major Landforms Lake Balaton This lake is located in the Transdanubian region of Hungary. It is the largest lake in Central Europe, and one of the biggest tourist attractions. Lake Balaton is often called as the Hungarian Sea. The lake itself covers two whole shores. The southern shores are ideal for small children because of the shallow water, however, on the north shore the water gets deeper.
Landforms • Danube River • The Danube is Europe’s second longest river. This river is perfect for a cruise. • The Danube flows through 10 countries. • The mouth of the Danube River is in the Black Sea. • The Danube River flows through the cities of Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and Bratislava.
Tourist Attractions. • The Museum of Fine Arts. • It is located in Hungarys capitol, Budapest. • This museum is one of the largest in the city of Budapest. • The history of the gallery begins in the year or 1870. • It’s a collection of Dutch, Italian, and Spanish Paintings.
More Tourist Attractions. • The Buda Castle. • The foundation of the castle was laid in the thirteenth century. • It sits on top of Castle Hill in the city of Budapest, Hungary’s capitol. • This castle was designated one of the greatest places in Europe. • The castle has 203 rooms now housing several museums, such as the National Historical Museum and the National Gallery.
Tourist Attractions • Memento Park. • This Park is home to almost four dozen statues, busts, and plaques. • László Szörényi, a literary historian, mentioned first the idea of Statue Park in an article in 1989. Which is located in the heart of Memento Park. • In December 1991, the Assembly of Budapest made a decision that each district should choose individually the statues to be removed.
Tourist Attractions. • Fishermen’s Bastion • This Castle is located on the eastern side of Castle Hill. • The Fishermen's Bastion received its name from the medieval ramparts system in the suburb named Fishermen's Town. • Beneath the Fishermen’s Bastion there is the old suburb of Vízi- város, now known as Water Town.
Tourist Attraction. • Gresham Palace. • This hotel is rated five stars. • It was built between 1904 and 1906. • This building used to be called the Nako House, a neoclassical palace that was built in 1827. • This building was designed by architect, Joseph Hild.
Tourist Attraction. • Chain Bridge. • The Chain Bridge is one of Budapest's most famous landmarks. • The bridge was built in the 19th century across the river Danube to connect Pest with Buda. • The Chain Bridge was the first permanent bridge in Budapest. • Before the Chain Bridge the only other bridge close was in Vienna, that bridge was a temporary bridge which means you can only use it in the summer. • In the winter time, the only way to get across Danube was to ride a ferry over.
Major Languages. • The official language spoken in Hungary is Hungarian. • The Hungarian name for the language is “magyar”. • 94% of the people who live in Hungary speak Hungarian, and 6% speak other languages.
Government • The president of Hungary is Janos Ader (2012). • The prime minister is Viktor Orban (2010). • The government in Hungary is a Parliamentary democracy.
National Holidays. • Labor Day- May 1st the ancient celebration of spring. • Hungary National Day- August 20th when Hungary was established. • Easter Day- April 8th celebrating Jesus’ resurrection. • Boxing Day- December 26th celebration of the second day of Christmas.
Economy • Hungary’s GDP is $198.1 billion. • Their agriculture is wheat, corn, sunflower seed, potatoes, sugar beets, pigs, cattle, poultry, and dairy products. • Ethnicity: Hungarian 92.3%, Roma 1.9%, unknown 5.8% (2001 census)
