THE EARLY YEARS • BORN IN BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND ON JULY 15,1943 • HER FATHER WAS AN ARCHITECT AND AN PASSIOINATE READER. THROUGH HIS BOOKS, JOCELYN WAS INTRODUCED TO THE WORLD OF ASTRONOMY. • HER FAMILY AND STAFF AT THE ARMAGH OBSERVATORY ENCOURAGED HER INTREST IN ASTRONOMY
HER STUDIES • IN 1965, BELL EARNED A DEGREE IN PHYSICS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW. • THAT SAME YEAR SHE BEGAN TO WORK ON HER PH.D AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY • STUDIED ALMOST EVERY WAVE SPECTRUM IN ASTRONOMY • RECEIVED HER PH.D IN RADIO ASTRONOMY FROM CAMBRIDGE IN 1968
DISCOVERIES AND CONTRIBUTIONS • WHILE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ANTHONY HEWISH AT CAMBRIDGE JOCELYN BELL DISCOVERED PULSARS • BELLS FIRST TWO YEARS IN CAMBRIDGE WERE SPENT ASSISTING THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN 81.5 MEGAHERTZ RADIO TELESCOPE • SHE WAS ALSO ELECTED AS A FELLOW OF THE ROYAL ASTONOMICAL SOCIETY IN 1969
Pulsars are stars that release regular bursts of radio waves and the discovery ranks as an important milestone in the history of astrophysics. PULSARS
THE TELESCOPE THAT BELL USED TO DISCOVER THE FIRST PULSAR GENRATED 121.8 METERS OF DATA EVERY 4 DAYS
TODAY • BELL IS MARRIED • SINCE LEAVING CAMBRIDGE BELL-BURNELL HAS SYUDIED THE SKY IN ALMOST EVERY REGION OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM • TODAY JOCELYN CONCERNS AND EFFORTS ARE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE ADVANCEMENT OF ASTRONOMY AND SHE IS DEEPLY INVOLVED IN THE TEACHING AND PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY.
