Finding information for your project Rebecca Fong Library Services Oct 2007
Content • Different information sources • Advantages of Journals to support research • Using databases • Subject gateways • External sources
Advantages of Journal articles to support research • Most up-to-date research will be found in journals • Researchers in the field will report their findings • Articles will be “quality checked” or “refereed” before publication (i.e. peer reviewed)
Where do we go for journal articles? • Library electronic databases! • Databases keep journal articles in a structured way. • They are developed by different publishers. • You can search across different journals of the same area at the same time.
Library electronic databases • They are searched by ‘keywords’ – so identify your concepts first. • All are accessible from the Library homepage under your subject portal (i.e. Computing) • Or look underDatabases A-Z
Examples of keywords: • automated software testing • Mobile commerce AND interface • Data mining AND privacy • Virtual classroom • Decision support system AND finance
Think of different keywords to maximise your results • Use alternative words / synonyms • virtual classroom or online learning ? or e-learning ? or web based learning? • E-commerce or e-business ?
Database : Business Source Premier • Good for BIT • Cross discipline (Business, technology, IT) • Full text available for titles we currently subscribe to.
Database: ACM Digital Library • By Association of Computing Machinery • Good for Computing discipline • Some are in full text, some are in abstracts.
Database: Scopus • Subject focus: science, technology, medical and social science • An index and abstracting database – full text will only be given when LSBU subscribes to it. • Cross search the web engine Scirus
Database: Safari e-books • Over 100+ e-books on computing / BIT areas. • Students can read them online, not downloadable. • Click on Library to get the whole list.
Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com) • Focus on scholarly journals only • Results are more focused – better at scientific and technological literature, less on social sciences • Some contents are free. Some are subscription based. Check on the library catalogue to see if we have full content.
Subject gateway What is it? • A collection of selected high quality web resources on a subject area • Some are free resources but some may lead to paid subscriptions Why use it? • Search results are more meaningful than search engines. Quality and not quantity.
Example of a Subject gateway: • Intute • Go to Library homepage > Search • Direct link: www.intute.ac.uk • Some links to full text e-journals, some not. • Example: • biometrics
External resources • Sconul Access Scheme • British Library • Interlibrary loan service – for final year and PG students • M25 Consortium – a consortium of Uni’s library catalogues within M25 areas • Link: Library homepage > Services for students > Access to other libraries
