The Bush Years • Gorbachev was reforming • Caused revolutions in Eastern Europe • Stopped being communists • Revolutions reached East Germany • Tore down Berlin Wall (1989) • United Germany once again • With Eastern European communist countries fading, the Soviet Union was forced to collapse

The Bush Years • Despite success in the Soviet Union, Bush faced many other foreign issues • Tiananmen Square • China’s communist government was still gong string despite other countries collapsing • Still repressing political speech • Protestors fought for Democracy • Chinese Government crushed the protestors • Many were killed and hundreds arrested
The Bush Years • Persian Gulf War • Saddam Hussein, leader of Iraq, invades Kuwait • Worried that they would continue invasion in to Saudi Arabia, Bush sends in military • Operation Desert Storm • War was over within a few months • Very few casualties • First American victory since WWII
The Bush Years • Even though Bush had to focus on foreign affairs, there were still domestic issues • Economy could not keep up the same pace it had under Reagan • End of Cold War • No more need for weapons or soldiers • Other businesses started downsizing • Government could not pay back loans • Heavy interest • Bush had to raise taxes • Recession and other issues had caused Bush to lose election of 1992
