  2. 3 Types of Commands • Tú (Informal Command) Informal / Telling somebody to do or not to do something This is the most common type of command 2) Usted (Formal Command) A more formal command / A more polite way of telling somebody to do something 3) Ustedes (Formal Command)

  3. Informal (Tú) Commands When using commands in Spanish, there are: 1) Affirmative= TO DO SOMETHING 2) Negative = NOT TO DO SOMETHING

The affirmative – Commands for Tú AR and ER Verbs: Take off the ending R of the infinitive Examples: Cantar - Canta Comer - Come IR Verbs Take off the ending IR of the infinitive + Add the letter E Examples: Vivir – Vive *Note: The Tú form command is the same as the regular Ud. Form present tense.

  6. Práctica 1) Eat the carrots! ¡Come las zanahorias! 2) Clean your room! ¡Limpia tu cuarto! 3) Wear a jacket! ¡Lleva una chaqueta!

  7. Irregulars: Informal Affirmatives • decir = di • hacer = haz • ir = ve • poner = pon • salir = sal • ser = sé • tener = ten • venir =ven

  8. Informal (Tú) Negative Commands To form the Infomral NEGATIVE Command (To tell somebody to NOT DO something): • Take the YO FORM, PRESENT TENSE of the verb • Take off the ending (-o) • Add AR= -es IR = -as ER = -as *Note: You also need to put “No” before each verb

  9. Ejemplos: Hablar  Hablo Habl__ = No hables Comer  Como Com__ = No comas

  10. Práctica Don´t eat the sandwhich! = ¡No comas la torta! Don´t speak to me! = ¡No me hables!

  11. Irregulars *Verbs that have irregular forms in the YO FORM PRESENT TENSE are irregular in the INFORMAL NEGATIVE COMMAND FORM: Poner = pongo = nopongas Tener = tengo = notengas Venir = vengo = novengas Salir = salgo = nosalgas Hacer = hago = no hagas Decir = digo = no digas

  12. Irregulars • Ser = no seas • Estar = no estés • Ir = no vayas • Dar= no des

  13. Práctica Don’t wear the red shirt! ¡No lleves la camisa roja! Wear the blue shirt! ¡Lleva la camisa azul! Go to the store! ¡Ve al supermercado! Buy milk! ¡Compra leche!
