How to Make an Accurate Portrait Drawing MOST important skill to learn: patience! If you are patient, you WILL be able to make significant progress in this class.
Spend some time finding a good location with strong lighting • Spend more time looking and measuring than drawing • Get the basic measurements down first • TAKE YOUR TIME • If you don’t get your measurements right, your drawing will never look right • Start with the biggest shapes first and work smaller: • 1. Overall shape of face • 2. Location of eyes, nose and mouth • 3. Simplified shadows • 4. More refined shadows • 5. More refined shape of nose, eyes and mouth • All of this must be correct before you move on to shading • Check and double check • STAND BACK from your drawing every 10 minutes • Simplify at first • Use lighter marks than you think you need • You can always get darker; its much harder to lighten a dark mark • Wrinkles, faint lines and creases will be very faint • -
