DEFENSIVE POSITION TERMINOLOGY * DEFENSIVE LINE NOSE - END - DASH * LINEBACKERS MIKE – SAM - ROBBER - BANDIT * DEFENSIVE BACKS STRONG and FREE SAFETY -CORNERS(2)
NOSE GUARD / D-TACKLE • * CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Big Enough (too small can be doubled). 2. Run Stopper (2-Gap Player). 3. Quickest big player. 4. Tough to move - Explosive punch. 5. Ideally a player who wrestles also because they are used to using their hands and leveraging opponent.
DEFENSIVE END * CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Big Enough (too small can be double-teamed). 2. Comfortable on both the edge and inside. 3. Leverage and contain conscious. 4. Tough to move - Explosive punch . 5. Good at using hands and squeezing space. 6. Probably a player who used to play post in basketball but got too thick and was too aggressive (bull in a china shop) to be successful in basketball.
DASH * CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Probably more rangy than other two on DL 2. Edge player who understands leverage and contain principles. 3. Most athletic of the defensive lineman. 4. Explosive punch - great at squeezing space 5. May very well play the #4 spot on the basketball team or a taller kid that wrestles 215. 6. Aggressive and pretty good speed.
MIKE and SAM LINEBACKER * CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Must be among the best tacklers on the team. 2. Good speed to cover D-gap to D-gap and beyond. 3. Skilled at shedding blocks. 4. Fills a gap and has an explosive punch. 5. Good leadership skills because they do most of the talking on defense. 6. ** A naturally instinctive defensive player ** you cannot coach every variable … these guys must simply have a little bit of “IT”.
ROBBER - BANDIT * CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Either most athletic LBs or most aggressive DBs. 2. They must run and cover like secondary guys. 3. Usually rangy but we have had great ones from 5’5 to 6’5. Common trait: Hitters and great tacklers! 4. Can play over a TE or in space over a Slot. 5. Must shed blocks like a LB with an explosive punch 6. Having football smarts is important. They defend the trick plays and the game breakers. 7. Blitz and pass rush skills necessary.
FREE and STRONG SAFETY • * CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Best tacklers of the secondary players. 2. Smart football player who studies film and learns on the go and during the game (each play is not a brand new experience). 3. Above average speed and cover skills. 4. Usually the vocal leaders of the secondary/perimeter. 5. Understand the “last line of defense” concept … slow to fly up unless they know … but once decided they attack downhill. 6. Having football smarts is important. They defend the trick plays and the game breakers also.
CORNERBACKS * CHARACTERISTICS: 1. Best cover skills on the team and among the fastest players on the defense. 2. Solid tacklers with the ability to shed blocks quickly. 3. Must have football savvy and smarts but also must be the ones with the ability to forget the last play (closer in baseball mentality). 4. Usually among the best vertical jumps on the team because of the importance of breaking on the ball. 5. Brave and courageous … “on an island” by themselves at times.
