The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle By: Avi “Not every thirteen-year-old girl is accused of murder, brought to trial, and found guilty. But I was just such a girl, and my story is worth relating even if it did happen years ago. Be warned, however, this is no Story of a Bad Boy, no What Katy Did. If strong ideas and action offend you, read no more. Find another companion to share your idle hours. For my part I intend to tell the truth as I lived it.
Setting • The novel is set in 1832. Most of it takes place on a ship in the Atlantic Ocean traveling from Liverpool, England to Providence, Rhode Island.
Women in 1832 were expected to be calm and obedient. Girls were prim and proper
Sailors were usually tough, rugged men. They were viewed as less refined as those who work on the mainland.
During this time, the Industrial Revolution was taking place. • Started in Europe around 1750 • Factories started using machines rather than workers to quickly manufacture products and meet supply and demand. • Charlotte’s father is “engaged in the manufacture of cotton goods” and had been working at an American business located in England.
Industrial Revolution • Goods could now be manufactured much quicker than before.
