  2. What is the defining characteristic of Judas?

  3. 1. Judas stands out as a man with impure motives - which led him to betray Jesus for monetary gain

  4. 2. John paints a stark contrast between Judas and Jesus a) Judas put his own interest first - which caused him to devalue others

  5. b) Jesus put the welfare of others first (John 18:8)

  6. - which motivated him to sacrifice himself on their behalf

  7. * Jesus was willing to give up his self-rights in order to become our Servant and Saviour. See Philippians 2:3-8 .

  8. Spiritual lesson: Are you and I willing to die to self by giving up our self-rights (Luke 9:23)?

  9. B. THE DENIAL OF JESUS BY PETER (JOHN 18:15-18; 25-27)

  10. - which led him to deny Jesus under severe pressure 1. Peter stands out as a man with wavering loyalty (John 18:17, 25, 27)

  11. a) Peter easily buckled under pressure even though he promised to be faithful unto death 2. John highlights the differences between Peter and Jesus b) Jesus demonstrated calm composure and regal authority throughout his arrest and trial

  14. C.THE TRIAL OF JESUS BY JEWISH AND ROMAN AUTHORITIES (JOHN 18:12-14; 19-24)

  15. 1. The Appearances before Annas and Caiaphas • What kind of person did Caiaphas turn out to be?

  16. a) Caiaphas stands out as a man with malicious intention (verse 14) - which led him to plot the death of Jesus

  17. b) Caiaphas was even prepared to conduct an illegal trial without proper witnesses • - which clearly reveals that Caiaphas had no love for truth and righteousness

  18. Spiritual lesson: • We must never sacrifice both truth and righteousness in order to condemn an innocent man.

  19. 2. The Appearance before Pontius Pilate • What was Pilate guilty of in conducting the trial of Jesus?

  20. a)Pilate lived to please people rather than the living God (verse 39) - which demonstrated that he had no fear of God in his heart

  21. b) Pilate stands out as a man without moral principles (verse 40) • - which led him to release Barabbas instead of Jesus

  22. Spiritual lesson: Are you and I guilty of the sin of omission mentioned in James 4:17?

  23. a) Why did Jesus refuse to give a direct answer to Pilate’s question (verse 34)? • Jesus wanted to ascertain Pilate’s personal understanding first

  24. b) What kind of kingdom did Jesus come to set up on this earth (verses 36-37)? • A spiritual kingdom • A theocracy

  25. c) Why did Jesus remain silent when Pilate posed him a question (verse 38)? • Jesus is only interested in sincere and serious seekers of the truth

  26. CONCLUSION

  27. We tend to equate wickedness with overt evil and sinful actions. Are you and I aware that impure and evil motives render us equally guilty before God on the Day of Judgement? See Romans 2:12-16.
