Avalon University School of Medicine • (AUSOM) offers comprehensive medical training designed to prepare students for medical practice in the United States, Canada, and in most countries around the world. Having a curriculum modeled after U.S. medical schools, AUSOM students are taught and trained in both the basic and clinical sciences for the purpose of being competent physicians. Having the quality of education at AUSOM at an affordable tuition cost, we currently have graduates practicing medicine in North America and in countries around the world.
AUSOM operates on a three semester schedule with an rolling admissions process. Students are able to enroll into AUSOM at any of the three start dates with classes beginning in January, May and September. Each semester is 15 weeks in length, with a short break in between semesters.
The first 4 semesters of the MD program, the basic sciences, are completed on the beautiful, well- developed island of Curacao. This is a very important time for AUSOM students, with the goal being to build a solid foundation of the medical level subjects.
Small class sizes allows for a more personalized education, and having highly qualified faculty are one of many ways AUSOM is able to ensure academic support. Student mentorship programs and tutoring are also available to further assist in strengthening the students basic science knowledge. Also with a Wi-Fi ready campus and extended library hours, we want students to make the most of their opportunity during the basic sciences.
Upon completion of the basic sciences, students will soon after begin our Fifth Semester in Beckley, West Virginia. This preclinical semester is 16 weeks in length. The first 8 weeks is designed to prepare students for their clinical science years, and the final 8 weeks is the “board preparatory” portion. Students will be provided with USMLE Kaplan material, and there will be live board preparatory instruction. Upon completion of the Fifth Semester, students will sit for the USMLE Step 1.
After completion of the USMLE Step 1, students will begin their clinical rotations. AUSOM requires students to complete 72 weeks of clinical rotations at our affiliated teaching hospitals across the United States and in Curacao. The sites in the United States in which students will have the opportunity of completing these rotations are – Ohio, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Nevada and Arizona.
