  1. ELIJAHOf Buxton By: Christopher Paul Curtis

  2. This book is Historical Fiction because it happened in the past in the 1800’s. It is also Historical Fiction because it could have happened to real people but the author probably made up the characters in this book. That is why this book is Historical Fiction. Genre

  3. One thing to prove it in this book is how people would get beaten and mistreated that they would die. Another reason to prove it in this book is how they would attempt to run away and they would get caught and would be brought back to the owner and would suffer cruel treatment. Another thing to prove it in this book is if you get sold to a slave owner your family might get split up and you will might not see them again. Main IdeaThe main idea is to show what African Americans went through during slavery.

  4. Elijah- Elijah is a brave but fragile boy who is the first African American boy to be born free in Buxton, Canada. He is also scared of hoopsnakes.Cooter- Cooter is Elijah best friend and also lives in Buxton. Cooter also gets in trouble a lot. He also steals food from Elijah. The Preacher- The preacher is a very bad man. He is greedy, has a big mouth, and he is a conman. Mr. Leroy- Mr. Leroy is a good man who works hard to help his family. To try to get his family out of slavery he works for Mrs. Holton. He helps Mrs. Holton put a pipeline in her backyard. Ma- Ma is Elijah's mother that tries to learn how to read but does not have the time to. Pa doesn’t like her cooking but he never told her that. Ma was born into slavery and her grandmother took care of her. Ma is scared of toady frogs. Pa- Pa is a very hard working man. He would never let Elijah get hurt. He has no doubt in Elijah. Story ElementCharacters

  5. This story mostly took place on a settlement in Buxton, Canada. The only people who left the settlement was Elijah, Mr. Leroy, The Preacher, Mr. Chatham. Only Elijah got back to the settlement without any injury. Elijah has a pond that only he knows about and how to get there. Elijah spends most of the time in the woods. Setting

  6. In the beginning the story’s main problem is that Elijah’s friend Mr. Leroy is working in Mrs. Holton’s backyard to make money so he can get his family out of slavery. His plan is to buy his son out so they can work and get enough money to buy the rest of his family out of slavery. The problem is he doesn’t have enough money to get his family out of slavery so he has to work really hard. PlotBeginning

  7. In the middle the Problem gets solved because when Mrs. Holton’s husband dies they make a sign to honor Mr. Holton. They made the sign in two weeks and Mr. Leroy carves it in one night. And when Mrs. Holton sees it she gives him $2200.00. PlotMiddle

  8. In the end The preacher said he was going to take the money and buy Mr. Leroy’s family out of slavery but he steals it instead. The Preacher starts gambling and he wins a lot of money but he doesn’t stop. He goes to a gambling place where white people gamble and got thrown out. He got tied to a wall and starts screaming and yelling but instead of sending him back to slavery they cut his tongue in half and killed him. They got Mr. Leroy’s money and took it. When Elijah went in the gambling place he could not find the money. Elijah made a promise to Mr. Leroy that said he would kill The Preacher if he could. But instead he only found five things he thought were ghosts. But they weren’t ghost’s they were runaway slaves. There was a mom, dad, a baby, and two teenagers. He tried to break them free but he could not. He went back and gave them his gun and his mom asked him to bring the baby back to the settlement and would call her hope. PlotEnd

  9. I think the author’s purpose of this book was to show and tell how hard it was to be a African American in slavery. I also think the purpose of this book was to show what harsh treatment was given to the African Americans in slavery. I also think another purpose is to always believe in yourself. Author’s Purpose
