This book is historical fiction because it was a real scene in a made up story.People could get their money stolen at any time. People back then worked for other people so they could buy their family back. All of this was in the story. This is why it is historical fiction. Genre
This is proved in the book because slaves were beaten and killed just because they were slaves. A second way this is proved in the book is that runaway slaves went to Buxton and were hiding in a tree because they did not want to go back to being a slave. When Elijah went looking for the preacher, there were people being hung. The slave owners slept right by the slaves that were chained so no one could escape. Main IdeaThe main idea of the book is to show how bad slavery was and how people went through it.
Elijah is a boy who is our age. He loves to go fishing but he does not use a rod. He uses stones instead. He is a really nice boy and very trustworthy. Elijah helps get the stolen money back. Cooter is Elijah’s best friend. He is very tall and strong. He is a trouble maker, but is still very nice. He is not the brightest in the world. The preacher is a bad person. He likes to steal food from people. One person in the book had been saving up his money to buy his family back, but the preacher stole it and gambled the money. Characters
Mr. Leroy is a hard working man. He works for a rich woman who pays him for helping her. He earned enough money to buy his family back, but the preacher stole it from him. Maw is Elijah’s mother. She cook’s for him and is really afraid of toady frogs. Paw is Elijah’s dad. He is tough and is not afraid of anything. Characters
The setting is the town of Buxton. Elijah loves being outside near the pond or at his house. He often visits a barn to ride a mule, Flap Jack. Elijah also travels many different places. Setting
Inthe beginning, Mr. Leroy earned enough money to buy his family back. He was so excited, he wanted to do it as fast as possible. He hired the preacher and another fellow to do it for him. When the preacher was stopping in a city, he stole the money and decided to gamble it. He lost the money, and Mr. Leroy got really mad. PlotBeginning
When Mr. Leroy found out that the preacher gambled all his money, he kidnapped Elijah so he could help him find the preacher and kill him. When they got to the preacher’s old gambling spot, he had left. They could not find the preacher. When Mr. Leroy and Elijahwere still hunting the preacher, Mr. Leroy died. Elijah was by himself. Elijah found somebody that knew the preacher. The man shared that the preacher went to gamble at an old spot which was in a barn. When Elijah got there, the preacher was in a corner all beaten up. Elijah was going to shoot the preacher, but he was already about to die so he did not. The preacher did not have any money. Elijah decided to go home. Before he left, he saw a baby of one of the slaves. Elijah asked if he could bring the baby back to Buxton so it would not die. His maw said yes! Elijah and the baby returned home. PlotEnd
